Ceramic capacitor package map

Which case size to assign for a given capacitance and voltage rating. Each cell shows the recommended package (the commonly stocked choice that still leaves usable capacitance under DC bias), the smallest package that exists, and a qty-1000 LCSC price for the recommended part. Click a cell for part numbers.

Reading the grid

  • Columns are the minimum voltage rating you need. The part listed may be rated higher: below about 1 µF, 50 V parts are the commodity and cost the same as low-voltage ones, so low-voltage columns often show a 50 V part.
  • A dot in the corner means the smallest package is at the edge of what the dielectric can do. Expect heavy DC-bias loss there, so the recommendation moves up one or two sizes.
  • A dashed amber border means few sources or a price that is high for the value. Hatched means no practical MLCC; use polymer, tantalum or several smaller MLCCs in parallel.
  • X7R wherever it is common. At 2.2 µF and up the market is mostly X5R (rated to 85 °C). If the board runs hot, search for an X7R/X7S equivalent and expect one size larger.

DC bias: rule of thumb

Class II capacitance falls as DC voltage rises, and the loss is worst in parts that pack the most capacitance into the least volume. Typical retained capacitance for a part operated at half its rating:

Part positionAt 50% of rated V
Well inside the range (e.g. 100 nF 50 V 0603)~80–95%
Mid-range (e.g. 1 µF 25 V 0603)~50–70%
At the density edge (e.g. 10 µF 10 V 0402)~20–40%

These are typical figures, not guarantees. For a rail that matters, check the specific part in Murata SimSurfing, Samsung's MLCC tool or TDK SEAT at your working voltage.

Where the data comes from

  • Availability: the JLCPCB/LCSC catalog via jlcsearch, filtered by capacitance and package and ranked by stock. A combination counts as available when real parts in that size are stocked. Packages smaller than 0402 are left out; 0201 exists for most values up to about 2.2 µF at 6.3–10 V.
  • Price: LCSC product pages, read on 2026-10-02, at the tier that covers 1000 pieces. This is retail LCSC pricing. JLCPCB assembly pricing for its "basic" parts is often 2–5× lower.
  • Prices and stock move. Treat the numbers as an order-of-magnitude guide.
